Four Spaces, One Addition

In a home shared by three generations, we needed to add a bit more space that would blend indoors and outdoors.

The solution was a stacked set of spaces: family room over a four-season room, extending to a deck over a screen porch. While none of the spaces was large in and of itself, combined, the spaces provided four various expansions of outdoor use: fully heated and cooled to completely unenclosed.

The two generations that live on the main floor are able to enjoy the family room which is completely opened up to the dining room. From there, they can access the deck from the same level. The lower-level generation has direct access to the sunroom, which then opens to the screen porch. All of the spaces are surrounded by natural light and fresh air in good weather, and easy access to the big back yard.
